The Wisconsin Badgers only have two recruits coming into the basketball program next year, but both have made the shortlist for Minnesota’s 2024 Mr. Basketball recognition.

Four-star recruit Daniel Freitag of Breck High School and three-star recruit Jack Robison of Badger-pipeline Lakeville North are both top-5 players in Minnesota, and their teams are still alive in the playoffs.

“I’m happy I was included on the list, it’s a nice award to be considered for,” Freitag said in a text to Badger Stripes.

Freitag is the highest-rated point guard recruit in the history of the UW men’s basketball program. He set the all-time scoring record for Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minnesota after only three years before transferring to Breck. His scoring was down in the first half of the 2024 campaign however, after an injury from the offseason hampered him.

“I’ve been playing on an ankle that has needed surgery since September,” Freitag explained.

But with the drop in scoring came a rise in other categories. After averaging about four assists per game in his junior season, Freitag is up to over six per game this season. And his scoring has turned around too.

“To be honest, I’ve just gotten used to the pain, which has made it easier to play my game,” Freitag continued. “I’m also playing at a school where I’d never played with any of the [guys] before, so through time I think I’ve gained their trust and confidence … [to] not be timid”

Since January, Freitag has averaged a whopping 33 points, nine rebounds and six assists per-game.

“When we win state, I’ll love my chances at winning Mr. Basketball,” Freitag said.

Robison plays for Lakeville North, a the program well-known for producing future Badgers. In recent years, alums include Nate Reuvers, Tyler Wahl and Nolan Winter.

Jack Robison, second from left, and Daniel Freitag, fourth from left, have both committed to Wisconsin.

Robison surpassed 1,000 career points earlier this season, and is just two games away from the state tournament.
